What to Expect from a Mastering Session

Mastering finalises both the sound and the files for release. You will hear level-matched comparisons between references, mix and master, with a brief note of what changed and why. Comparisons to your original mix and any references you provided. The aim is a master that meets technical standards and you can sign off with confidence.

Mastering FAQ

What do you need from me to start mastering?

A final stereo mix as a high-resolution WAV at the session sample rate, 24-bit or higher. Leave the mix bus free of brickwall limiting and clipping. Aim for peaks below minus 6 dBFS and an average around minus 14 LUFS. Include track titles, order, ISRCs if you have them, and any reference tracks.

Should I leave mix bus processing on?

Keep creative processing that defines the sound. Remove hard limiting or clipping that only adds level. If unsure, supply two versions: one with your bus processing and one without.

How loud will the master be?

Loudness is set to platform targets while preserving dynamics. True peaks are contained so the master survives encoding on streaming services. If you need a louder preview for testing, a listening copy can be provided without affecting the approved master.

How long does mastering take?

For a single, a first pass is typically ready within one to two working days once files are approved. EPs and albums take longer due to sequencing and consistency checks. A schedule is agreed before work begins.

Do I need to attend the mastering session?

Attendance is optional. Sessions can be attended in the studio or reviewed remotely with scheduled listen-throughs and real-time feedback.

What will I receive at the end?

A high-resolution WAV master with correct naming and metadata. Platform-specific files for streaming, radio and television can be supplied. CD DDP images and vinyl premasters with appropriate headroom and side timings are available on request.

Can you master from stems?

Yes, when mix adjustments are needed. However, stem mastering is handled case by case because it overlaps with mixing and may affect pricing and timelines.

How do revisions work?

Versioned masters and concise change notes are provided. Unlimited revisions within the agreed scope are included until you approve the release master.
